What Bill Cosby and his Accusers Need to Do Now

Over the past few weeks, many in America have been surprised, shocked, and saddened by the rape allegations that have been leveled against Bill Cosby — one of the most beloved personalities in television and entertainment history. With more than ten women in the past year alleging that Bill Cosby drugged and raped or sexually assaulted them, it seems as though the proverbial skeletons of the 77-year-old comedian are coming out of the closet.

While Cosby has not publicly addressed the allegations, it certainly is ashamed that his long career appears to be coming to a close under this cloud of indignity stemming from sins that were committed twenty-five to thirty-five years ago. If, in fact, Mr. Cosby is guilty, it is a testament to the Biblical proverb, “Be sure your sins will find you out.”

The truth of the matter is, none of us should be quick to condemn Bill Cosby because all of us have sins in our past that we would like to keep behind us. But what should Bill Cosby and his accusers do about these issues? And, perhaps, more importantly, what should each of us do about our sin issues?

First, Mr. Cosby should confess his sins openly and honestly. The Bible says in Proverbs 28:13, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” I am sure that due to his age and due to the amount of good that he has done throughout his life, the American public stand ready to forgive Bill Cosby and move on from this part of his life. However, Mr. Cosby can only be truly forgiven if he confesses and admits what he has done wrong.

Second — and most importantly — Bill Cosby should turn to Jesus Christ for forgiveness of his sins, for his own peace of mind, and for assurance about where he is going after he dies. Certainly, at his age, these issues are weighing upon his mind. For that matter, all of his accusers ought to trust Jesus Christ as their Saviour as well because they are sinners too.

The fact of the matter is that Bill Cosby’s education cannot save him now. His money and fame cannot save him now. His success and philanthropy cannot save him now. His good deeds cannot save him now. None of these things, no matter how hard he worked to achieve them and no matter how much we appreciate him for them, can deliver him from his current troubles and certainly cannot pave the way for him after he dies. The only person who can do that for him (and for you) is Jesus Christ — the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

Without the salvation that Jesus Christ offers, our sins automatically condemn us to death and eternal punishment. The Bible says, “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Jesus Christ can give us eternal life because He took the punishment for our sins upon Himself when He died on the cross two thousand years ago for you, for me, for Bill Cosby, and for the entire world. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

I encourage Bill Cosby and the dear ladies who are accusing him of sexually assaulting them to accept the salvation that Jesus Christ died in order to make available for him. We cannot save ourselves from our sins or the punishment of our sins no matter what we do. We can only be saved through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”

You too can make the decision to accept the grace of God in your life. No matter what you have done, no matter how terrible you think your sins are, Jesus died for you so that you can be saved from your sins and from the punishment that you deserve. On top of that, you can have eternal life in Heaven with God after you die. You may not be as old as Bill Cosby, but death will come for you one day, and I encourage you to be ready.

The decision you face now is simply this: Will you admit that you can do nothing to save yourself? And will you trust Jesus Christ who has already done everything necessary to save you?

If you answered yes, may I encourage you to not delay your decision to trust Christ, for tomorrow is not promised you. Right now, I encourage you to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and sin’s consequences by believing that He died, was buried, and rose again. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” It is as simple as that.

If you accept Jesus Christ into your heart, you will begin a relationship with God that will last for eternity. If you place your faith and trust in Him, He will enter your life as the solution to your sin problem. He will give you a new heart and a new mind. You will no longer be bound to your old, sinful ways, but you will be enabled and empowered to do good through Jesus Christ. On top of that, your eternal future will be secure; you will go to Heaven to be with God when you die.

If you want to begin this relationship right now, you can pray a short prayer to let God know that you have decided to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Please repeat after me and mean it from your heart.

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever so that I can have your peace and assurance about my life today and my eternal future. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
