This past week, the European Space Agency accomplished an incredible feat. A space probe named Philae was launched by the spacecraft, Rosetta, and it successfully landed on a comet zipping through space at 80,000 miles an hour. It was an event ten years in the making. The scientists were thrilled that their hard work had paid off. Philae and Rosetta began sending back images of the far-off comet, and scientists were able to begin analyzing what they were able to discover about this space object.

Amid the hand-clapping and back-slapping, however, some people poked fun at the landing online. Twitter users popularized the hashtag #WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant. The hashtag was followed by a statement describing something else of greater importance that our resources should be dedicated to accomplishing. Here are some of the most popular of these messages:

#WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant give children all over the world good living conditions and education
#WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant stop Assad from committing genocide with chemical weapons

#WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant live in a peaceful world, free from prejudice, racism and hate
#WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant lower the cost of tuition for college

Some people gave their tweets a light-hearted edge as they aired minor greivances, some of which included:

#WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant stop saying Hump Day on Wednesdays

As we look over the course of human history, we will find that mankind has accomplished some pretty incredible things. We have scaled the highest mountains, explored the ocean floor, walked on the moon, carved countries out of wildernesses, found cures for deadly diseases, mastered the art of flying, and made it possible to communicate with nearly anyone anywhere in the world via the internet just to name a few. Yet, despite all of the science, technology, manpower, and money at our disposal, it seems as though we can do nothing about issues that are of far more importance. Millions around the world still languish in poverty. Violent crime still brings unrest to communities. Our forms of mass transportation — planes, trains, and subways — have been hijacked and turned into scenes of carnage by terrorists. Wars and strife continue to ravage the globe each and every day.

With all that we can do, there are some things that it seems like we just can’t do. We can’t bring about world peace. We can’t bring prosperity to everyone. And even though scientists, philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual leaders have tried, we have not been able to solve the problem of mankind’s evil tendencies. After thousands of years of progress and advancements, man still has not found a way to curb the evil tendencies of the human race. Even though many of us would not like to admit it, we are still people who are, as the Bible says, deceitful and desperately wicked.

The only solution for mankind’s tendency toward evil is not something that is within our power to do; it is something that is outside of ourselves. This solution lies only with God; and two thousand years ago, He intervened in human history to provide His solution — the solution — for mankind’s sin problem once and for all.

Our problem of sin automatically condemns us to death and eternal punishment. Those are the results of disobeying God and breaking His laws. Although the Bible says, “the wages of sin is death,” it also says, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The solution to the problem of man’s sin and the evil that infects the world is the sacrifice of Jesus Christ — God’s Son who was sent into the world to save it. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

We cannot save ourselves from sin or the punishment of sin no matter what we do. We can only be saved through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”

What did Jesus Christ have to do to save us from our sin? He had to take on Himself the punishment that we deserve. Isaiah 53 says, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows… he was wounded for our transgressions [wrongdoings], he was bruised for our iniquities [sins].” When Jesus Christ hung on the cross those many years ago, God poured out the wrath that was meant for us on his very own Son. After Jesus died, He was buried, and He rose from the dead three days later. By His resurrection, He proved that He had power over death and Hell, and He has the ability to save us from death and Hell if we trust in Him.

The decision you face now is simply this: Will you admit that you can do nothing to save yourself? And will you trust Jesus Christ who has already done everything necessary to save you?

If you answered yes, may I encourage you to not delay your decision to trust Christ, for tomorrow is not promised you. Right now, I encourage you to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and sin’s consequences by believing that He died, was buried, and rose again, and receiving Him into your life by faith. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” It is as simple as that.

If you accept Jesus Christ into your heart, you will begin a relationship with God that will last for eternity. If you place your faith and trust in Him, He will enter your life as the solution to your sin problem. He will give you a new heart and a new mind. You will no longer be bound to your old, sinful ways, but you will be enabled and empowered to do good through Jesus Christ. On top of that, your eternal future will be secure; you will go to Heaven to be with God when you die.

If you want to begin this relationship right now, you can pray a short prayer to let God know that you have decided to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Please repeat after me and mean it from your heart.

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever so that I can have your peace and assurance about my life today and my eternal future. Amen.
