Things That Last Forever

0:00

We live in a world that appears to be awfully temporary. The events of each day seem bent on making us understand that we are living on borrowed time — that at any moment everything we know could come to a screeching halt. Everyday, lives are cut short by illness, car accidents, and criminal activity. Each hour serves as a reminder that we ought to be grateful for every breath we take. As the Bible says, life is just “a vapor that appeareth for a little while and then passeth away.”

Just this past week, dozens of high school students from Los Angeles were on a bus heading to northern California to visit a university. The journey was an expression of their dreams, aspirations, and plans for the future. However, it was cut short when a FedEx truck exploded into flames and crashed into the bus. Ten people on the bus were killed — their lives cut short, the dreams they had for the future forever left unfulfilled.

Despite evidence that seems to point to the contrary, death is unnatural. The cessation of a human life at any age was never meant to be. The reality is: we are eternal souls meant to live and enjoy a never-ending relationship with an eternal God. Death was not a part of the Creator’s original plan for you and me.

You may think that when you die, that will be the end of everything for you — you will simply cease to exist. But that is not the case. When your body dies, your spirit will separate from it and continue to live throughout eternity in one of two eternal locations — Heaven or Hell. Heaven and Hell are just as real as the city where you live. And your immaterial soul is just as real as the physical body it is held in right now.

Heaven, Hell, and your soul — these are things that last forever.

Heaven is a place of eternal happiness and bliss. Hell is a place of eternal sadness, grief, and pain. Where we go depends on a choice that we make in life. Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction (Hell), and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life (Heaven), and few there be that find it.”

The wide, broad way is the way of earthly pleasure and sin — the things that we think will bring us happiness and satisfaction — but will eventually lead to eternal destruction in Hell. The straight and narrow way is the way of following God’s Son Jesus Christ. On this road, everything is not always easy, but the destination is eternal life in Heaven with God where we will be at peace and rest forever.

Which road will you walk? Like the high school students who died in that fiery accident this week, you may think that you have all the time in the world. But the reality is: you don’t know how much time you have left. I want to encourage you to get on the road that will lead to eternal life while you have a chance. I encourage you to give your life to Jesus Christ — He is the only One who can ensure that you go to Heaven when you die. You can give your life to Him today by taking the following steps:

First, recognize that your sins have separated you from God. Our sins are the bad or wrong things that we do. In honest repentance, agree with God about your sinfulness and admit your need for forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Second, realize that God loves you, and believe that his perfect Son, Jesus Christ, died for our sins — taking the punishment that we deserve. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross, we do not have to go to Hell. We can be saved from that terrible place.

Third, accept Jesus Christ’s invitation to receive salvation by trusting him by faith to be your Savior. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you want to open your heart and life to Jesus Christ and allow Him to bring peace between you and God, you can pray a short prayer to let God know about your decision. Repeat after me and mean it from your heart:

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Would you like to receive forgiveness for your sins, salvation from the eternal punishment for your sins, and eternal life with God in Heaven? Do you want to tear down the iron curtain that your sins have built up between you and God? If so, allow me to share with you three simple steps that you need to take to give your life to Christ and begin a relationship with God today.

First, accept what God says about you and admit that you are a sinner. Romans 3:10 says, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” When it comes to being a sinner, we are all in the same boat.

Second, understand that the punishment for sinning (breaking even one of God’s laws) is death and eternal separation from God in a place called Hell. Romans 3:23 says, “the wages of sin is death.” Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul that sinneth it shall die.” God sent Jesus to save us from this death.

Third, believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, shed His blood in our place, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God. First Corinthians 15:3-4 says, “…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Fourth, accept Jesus Christ’s invitation to be forgiven of your sins and receive eternal life by inviting Jesus Christ into your life by faith as your Savior from sin’s consequences. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you trust Jesus Christ for salvation, you will be saved from sin, spiritual death, and hell, and you will begin a relationship with God that will last forever. If this is your heart’s desire, you can pray a short prayer to let God know about your decision:

Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven.
