One of the most beloved Christian hymns of our day is “In Christ Alone” by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. The words of this song express many beautiful truths about Jesus Christ and the relationship that people can enjoy with Him. Please listen as I read the words of this song to you.
In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.
The writers of the song said, “Of all the hymns we have written, this hymn is the most popular wherever we go. I wanted it to become a hymn that would declare the whole life of Christ and what it meant. Something that could teach people the foundations of what we believed in Christ — the God who changed all of history and who wants a relationship with each us.”
Allow me to share with you three truths that this song expresses that will help you trust Christ alone:
First, in Christ alone, we have salvation from sin. The Bible says in Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.” We are all sinners. We have all broken the laws of God, and our sins automatically separate us from God and destine us for eternal punishment in Hell. However, God, in His mercy and love, provided a way of salvation from sin and the punishment of sin. This way of salvation is described in John 3:16 which says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” You can find salvation from sin through Christ alone.
Second, in Christ alone, we find sufficient strength to live in this present world. Jesus Christ said plainly, “In the world ye shall have tribulation (trouble, difficulty, hardship): but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Those who have accepted the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ gain the strength to endure hardship, suffering, misfortune, and even persecution. They receive comfort from this promise found in Romans 8:38-39: “Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” You, too, can find the strength you need to face anything in life through Christ alone.
Third, in Christ alone, we find assurance for eternity. One of the questions people wonder about the most is: What happens when my life ends? Is there an eternity? If so, what is it like? Thankfully, the Bible provides answers to all of these questions. After death, we each will spend eternity in one of two places: in Hell, a place of eternal separation from God, or in Heaven, a place of eternal peace, pleasure, and union with God.
Most people want to spend eternity in Heaven with God. However, while they are living, they also want to know for sure that they will go to Heaven when they die. They want assurance. And, you can find that assurance in Christ alone. Jesus Christ said in John 5:24, “Verily, verily (or “truly, truly”) I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Jesus Christ also told His disciples in John 14:2-3, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
In Christ alone, you can find salvation from sin and the punishment of sin, sufficient strength to endure the trials of this life, and assurance about spending eternity in Heaven with God.
Would you like to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior so that you can gain the blessings and benefits of a relationship with God? If so, we must admit that we are sinners in need of forgiveness, and then trust Jesus Christ to save us from our sins and the consequences of our sins. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
You can pray a short prayer to let God know that you have decided to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour and that you want to begin a relationship with Him. Please repeat after me and mean it from your heart.
Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ’s sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever so that I can have your peace and assurance about my life today and my eternal future. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
