Have you ever felt dissatisfied with the world? Have you ever felt as though there ought to be more to the life that you are living? As though there was something major missing from your life? Do you know what it is you are longing for?
You are longing for life as it was meant to be lived.
J.R.R. Tolkien, the late English writer and professor most known for the fantasy epics, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, said: “We all long for Eden, and we are constantly glimpsing it: our whole nature at its best and least corrupted, its gentlest and most human, is still soaked with the sense of exile.” Yes, the best of us and the worst of us, feel a tug in our hearts for Eden — the original creation where the first man and woman lived in perfect peace and harmony with God, with each other, and with nature — the original creation that God called “good.” So, what went wrong? Why did Adam and Eve have to leave this paradise?
The reason can be summarized by three words that start with S.
The first S represents the Serpent: The Bible says that “the serpent was more subtil (or sly and beguiling) than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.” The serpent was used by Satan, the enemy of God, to enter the Garden and tempt Adam and Eve to disobey God by eating fruit from a tree that God had forbidden them to eat from.
The second S represents Sin: The Bible says that the first woman, Eve, “took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband, Adam, and he did eat.” When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit, they sinned against God. In that moment, they gained a sinful nature that they had not had before. All of us who are descended from Adam and Eve are born with a sin nature — it is in our DNA.
The third S represents Sickness: The Bible tells us that as punishment for their sin, not only did God ban Adam and Eve from living in the perfect Garden again, he also told Adam that from then on he would have to do hard work to provide for himself and his family because the earth itself had been cursed. It would no longer freely produce fruits and vegetables for mankind. He told Eve that she would suffer pain in childbirth. The whole world was affected by Adam and Eve’s sin. The reason why we have decay, death, disease, and natural disasters is because of their original sin. All of the pain and suffering in the world was never meant to be. It is a result of that first sin in the Garden of Eden.
The good news, however, is that God has plans for the earth to be remade. He will not allow it to remain in this sick, diseased state forever. The apostle John, who was a disciple of Jesus Christ, was given a vision of this recreated world. In Revelation 21:1 he wrote: “I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” This New Heaven and New Earth will be like the original Eden but far better. God himself will live there and so will His Son Jesus Christ. It will be a perfect paradise that sin will be unable to mar or destroy.
Would you like to go to this place and spend all of eternity with God? If so, there are a few steps you must take.
First, recognize that your sins have separated you from God. Even though Adam and Eve were the first to sin, we must each take responsibility for our own actions. In honest repentance, agree with God about your sinfulness and admit your need for forgiveness. First John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Second, realize that God loves you, and believe that the sinless Jesus Christ died for your sins — taking the punishment that you deserve. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the only thing that makes it possible for God to forgive us of our sins and allow us to live in the New Heaven and the New Earth.
Third, accept Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and sin’s consequences by believing that he died, was buried, and rose again, and receiving Him into your life by faith. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you accept Jesus Christ into your heart, you will begin a relationship with God that will last for eternity. You will be able to get on the straight and narrow road that will lead you to greater intimacy with God, and eventually to your eternal home in the New Heaven and the New Earth. If you want to begin this relationship right now, you can pray a short prayer to let God know that you have decided to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour so that you can spend eternity with him. Please repeat after me and mean it from your heart.
Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ’s sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
